At DEW Construction, developing exceptional builders requires hands-on experience, mentorship, and a firsthand understanding of how successful projects come together in the field.
To support the growth of the next generation of construction professionals, DEW recently launched the first session of its new Project Engineer Constructability Training Program. This hands-on initiative is designed to help Project Engineers develop a deeper understanding of field operations, strengthen technical expertise, and build the practical skills needed to lead successful projects throughout their careers.
The inaugural training session took place at Charlotte Central School in Charlotte, Vermont, where participants had the opportunity to step away from their desks and into an active construction environment. The day began with a walkthrough of the project, highlighting the various phases of work DEW has completed at the school over the years and providing valuable context for the day’s work.
Participants then reviewed window replacement details, manufacturer installation requirements, and weather barrier systems before taking part in a pre-installation meeting. Together, they discussed the planning, coordination, sequencing, and quality standards required to successfully complete the work before heading into the field to put those lessons into practice.
The hands-on portion of the training focused on removing existing windows, preparing openings, installing weather-resistant barriers, setting new windows, and completing flashing details in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
By performing the work themselves, participants gained firsthand insight into the craftsmanship, precision, and attention to detail required to deliver quality construction. The experience also reinforced the important connection between the work completed in the office and the realities of field execution.

The training is the first in an ongoing series of Constructability Training sessions that will provide Project Engineers with hands-on learning opportunities on projects featuring DEW self-perform work. Designed as a long-term professional development initiative, the program will continue to expose participants to a variety of construction scopes and field operations, helping them build a stronger understanding of how projects are planned, coordinated, and executed in the field.
The first group, consisting of Project Engineers Rosey Thompson, Nick Wright, and Gideon Cyr, embraced the experience with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, setting a strong foundation for future sessions.
