As May comes to a close, DEW Construction recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month—a reminder that mental well-being is essential to the strength, safety, and success of our industry.
At DEW, this is not just a moment on the calendar. Mental health is part of our daily reality—on our jobsites, in our offices, and in the way we support one another. Creating an environment where employees feel respected, supported, and comfortable asking for help is fundamental to how we work and how we succeed as a team.
Why Mental Health Matters in Construction
Construction is demanding work. Tight schedules, physically challenging environments, long hours, and the responsibility of maintaining safety—for ourselves and others—can take a toll over time.
Across the industry, higher rates of stress, burnout, substance use, and other mental health challenges are well documented. Too often, these struggles go unrecognized or unspoken.
At DEW, we believe that prioritizing mental health is not a sign of weakness—it is a reflection of strength, resilience, and a commitment to looking out for one another. Just as physical safety is a core priority, mental well-being must also be part of the conversation to ensure our employees go home healthy each day.
Our Commitment
DEW Construction is committed to fostering a workplace culture where:
- Employees feel supported and respected
- Conversations around mental health are normalized
- Early warning signs are recognized and addressed
- Stigma is reduced through education and awareness
As a Recovery Friendly Workplace, we are dedicated to creating an environment where individuals in recovery are supported, respected, and empowered to succeed. This commitment helps reduce stigma and strengthens both our workforce and our communities.
Investing in Education and Awareness
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, DEW employees participated in the Associated Builders and Contractors NH/VT Mental Health Series, a four-week program focused on the intersection of workplace culture and mental well-being.
The series provided practical tools and insights through sessions including:
-
Drugs in the Workplace
Understanding the evolving landscape of substance use, impairment, and employer responsibilities. -
Behind the Vest: The Weight of Our Mental Backpack
Exploring the emotional and psychological load many workers carry into high-stress roles. -
Built to Last: Mental Wellness in the Workplace
Practical strategies and frameworks for building sustainable mental wellness at work. -
Don Demers – Lived Experiences
A powerful, personal perspective highlighting the real-world impact of mental health challenges and recovery.
Through expert-led discussions and powerful personal perspectives, participants gained a deeper understanding of how to recognize early warning signs, manage stress, reduce stigma, and support those around them.
We thank Associated Builders and Contractors NH/VT for their leadership in delivering meaningful, impactful training to our industry.
Moving Forward—Together
Mental health affects all of us—whether directly or through someone we care about. Continuing this conversation and encouraging one another to seek support when needed is essential to building stronger teams and safer jobsites.
At DEW, we remain committed to fostering a culture rooted in safety, trust, and support—on the job and beyond.
