Dartmouth College adds state-of-the-art library storage and records management facility.
This 19,672 gross square foot building is designed to centralize the storage of infrequently used library books and house the Records Management Department for Dartmouth College, enhancing the College’s academic and administrative efficiency. Located at 54 Etna Road, this facility addresses the urgent need for increased offsite storage capacity, ensuring the expected growth of Library collections for at least the next 15 years.
The building features two distinct sections: a 40-foot-high area dedicated to high-density storage and a nearly 20-foot-tall section that includes office space, a loading dock, and a processing area. The high-density storage area, approximately 12,420 square feet, is designed to accommodate the vast collection of library books, while the remaining 7,252 square feet is allocated for administrative functions.
Constructed with precast concrete structural exterior walls, the facility’s south façade is adorned with a decorative multi-color metal scrim, simulating the appearance of books on a shelf. Interior storage spaces are equipped with systems to closely monitor proper ventilation and humidification according to the materials being stored.
