Breathing new life into a historic gem, the transformation of the former Steven & Burns salon into Northfield Savings Bank blends modern functionality with rich heritage.
Designed by Duncan Wisniewski Architecture and Christine Burdick Design, this state-of-the-art banking hall now serves as a vibrant community hub. The project began with stripping the existing space down to its core, including selective demolition of walls, ceiling systems, floors, and interior doors. The existing ductwork within the main vaulted area of the Banking Hall was also removed as part of the abatement process to ensure the space was safe and ready for new construction. In the second phase, the space was revitalized with new interior walls and ceiling systems, the installation of new doors and storefronts, and the addition of new millwork, flooring, plumbing fixtures, and mechanical equipment. New lighting systems were implemented to enhance the ambiance of the space. The design seamlessly blends modern functionality with preserved elements of the original building. Adorned with stunning artwork from local artists, the space now boasts a unique and vibrant touch. Originally constructed in 1902 by renowned stone mason and builder Hiram Salls for the Howard National Bank, the building’s historical elements were carefully preserved and highlighted throughout the renovation. The result is a state-of-the-art banking hall and offices that serve as a vibrant marketplace for the community.
