Elizabeth Stillwell named IAIP Professional of the Year.
Elizabeth Stillwell, Risk Management Manager was recently named the Risk Management Professional of the Year for Region 1 by the International Association of Insurance Professionals (IAIP). Region 1 includes the New England states, New York and Pennsylvania, and its conference was held last week in Essex, Vermont. The award is given at the local, regional, and national level annually to recognize an IAIP member who has demonstrated superior knowledge in their field and professional advancement through educational pursuits. As the regional award recipient Elizabeth’s application will be considered on the international level at the Annual Convention to be held June 5-7, 2014 in San Diego.
Lake Champlain Waldorf High School Breaks Ground
Monday, April 7, 2014 – DEW Construction Corp. along with Lake Champlain Waldorf School officials and building committee members broke ground today on the first phase of two renovation/addition projects for the Lake Champlain Waldorf School in Shelburne, VT. The first project consists of relocating their Charlotte, VT high school campus to the existing Morgan Horse Museum property in Shelburne, VT, and includes extensive renovations to the 16,500 square foot post and beam wood-framed building. The new school will contain classrooms, a spacious student common room, professional kitchen, art studio, woodworking and practical arts workshops, science labs and a multi-use community room. The second project entails the renovation of and addition to the grade school community room space. About half of the current community room space will be reconfigured into a new arts classroom while the other half will be leveled, making room for a new large, multi-purpose gym and performance space. Both projects will incorporate sustainable building techniques and products to meet strict environmental criteria, including an insulated envelope, high performance windows, advanced lighting controls and an energy efficient HVAC system with heat recovery ventilation. Both projects will be completed for the 2014-2015 school year. The architect for the project is Pill Maharam Architects (PMa) of Shelburne, VT.
Peter Kelley, P.E. Joins DEW Construction Corp.
DEW is excited to announce that Peter Kelley, P.E. has recently been hired as Director of Business Development. Kelley will be responsible for driving business development activities across Vermont and upstate New York while further developing existing client relations. In this role, he will work closely with Don Wells, DEW President and founder. Wells stated, “We are delighted to have Pete join our team. He possesses the important commercial and technical experience that will prove critical in assisting us to accelerate our business growth.” Kelley brings with him over 25 years of business development, project management and construction experience. His expertise includes driving targeted business development activities, developing and managing business networks, as well as scope development, planning, and leading projects. Kelley comes to DEW Construction from General Dynamics OTS where he served as a Program Manager on military contracts. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont. Kelley is actively involved in the community including serving on the Town of Williston DRB and with the University of Vermont in several capacities including chair of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, member on the Vermont Regional Board Athletic Subcommittee and mentor in the student / athlete mentor program.
Michael Canavan – DEW’s 2013 Safety Superintendent of the Year
Michael Canavan is DEW’s 2013 Safety Superintendent of the Year. Currently Mike is the head Superintendent of DEW’s Barre City Place job in Barre, Vt. In July of 2013, Barre City Place received SHARP (Safety Health Achievement Recognition Program) status from the Vt. Department of Labor in conjunction with federal OSHA. The benefits of SHARP status are many and Mike’s dedication to safety through comprehensive orientations laid the ground work in receiving this recognition. DEW employees Gordon Newman, Jordan Armstrong, Richard Furman, John Krezinski, as well as numerous subcontractor foremen on the job, nominated Mike. “Mike takes the safety on his projects very seriously. Mike worked very hard to get the SHARP flag on Barre City Place and he was very proud of gaining that honor. His work didn’t stop there. He has continued to stay on top of safety at Barre City Place to make this job the safest I have seen. Mike and Gordon (Rick) Newman have put in many hours and they both deserve the honor of Safety Employees of the Year.” –Jordan “Mike conducts Safety Field Orientations otherwise referred to as an SFO. Any and all new workers meet with Mike within the first day or two on the jobsite and receive this training for at least 60 minutes.
