DEW is an Environmental Partner with Vermont’s Small Business Administration. Annually we must calculate our consumption of environmentally friendly goods and provide data on what we did with our waste. 2011 Main Office Data (includes adjoining businesses): Total waste was 16.77 tons. 7.02 tons were recycled and 3.9 tons were composted, representing a 65% diversion rate. Simply put; 1/3 of all our waste went to a landfill and 2/3 did not. Additionally, Office Manager Janelle Leduc prioritizes purchases of green (green seal) and recycled products. 2011 Project Data: DEW projects track their waste data and here are a figures for a few projects. Boltwood Place Apts (demo and new construction): 60% recycled/diverted Jay Peak Hotel Jay & Waterpark (new construction): 18% recycled/diverted Castleton Facility Barn (new construction): 31% recycled/Diverted Castleton New 2012 Hall (new construction): 48% recycled/diverted Malone Border Station (new construction): 75% recycled/diverted Bennington State Office Complex (demo and new construction): 87% recycled/diverted Certainly, DEW is doing its part to keep waste out of landfills. There are two landfills in Vermont and the Moretown facility is close to capacity. When these fill, trash might have to go out of state which would represent a cost increase to all citizens.
DEW Awarded Jay Peak 2012 Golf and Mountain Suites/Lodge and Townhouse Projects
DEW Construction Corp. was recently hired as Construction Manager for the Jay Peak 2012 Golf and Mountain Suites/Lodge and Townhouse Projects! This $15 million + project includes constructing 100 residential units (approximately 24 multi-family buildings of various sizes) – 70 Golf and Mountain Suites units (prebuilt cottage structures) and 30 Lodge and Townhouse units along with associated infrastructure and roadway components. The anticipated start date is May 1, 2012.
DEW Awards 2011 Safety Merit Award to Kal-Vin Employee
DEW’s SHARP (Safety, Health and Resource Protection) Team developed the Safety Merit Award to recognize an individual or company who understands the importance of safety on our job sites. We are pleased to announce that Dolor Smith with our subcontractor Kal-Vin at Jay Peak is this year’s recipient. Dolor was nominated by DEW Superintendent Dave Lothian. “Dolor is Kal-Vin’s safety coordinator here at Jay. Without his help over the past 12 months I do not believe our overall safety performance would be as good. He has always been very quick to respond to safety issues and always followed up on any discipline that was needed.” Ben Spaulding, DEW’s Safety Coordinator at Jay Peak worked closely with Dolor and confirmed that he was an essential component in the overall safety excellence at Jay Peak. Dolor, a devoted father of three children, lives in Auburn, Maine and made the weekly 175 mile trek to Jay Peak in all weather conditions. The SHARP Team has added Dolor’s name to the Merit Award plaque and he has received $100 cash.
Fred Kilar – DEW’s 2011 Safety Superintendent of Year
Superintendent Fred Kilar is DEW’s 2011 Safety Superintendent of the Year. Many of you have not met Fred as his workload has primarily been in New Hampshire. He’s been with DEW for a few years and has distinguished himself when it comes to safety excellence. He was nominated by Rick Davis and Gordon Newman. “I feel that in the few years that Fred has been with DEW, he has taken a lot of time to catch up with the DEW ways of safety.” – Gordon “He’s been with DEW two years plus. I have worked with him for three weeks and he is spot on in everything related to safety – unbelievably safety oriented. I’ve learned a few things I didn’t know about safety in three weeks.” – Rick Let’s discuss Fred’s ‘trial by fire’. After completing the Advance Transit project, Fred took on the Cleveland-Rudman project in Concord. It was located in a government building and one of the occupants is Federal OSHA. Basically, OSHA was in and around Fred’s job every day. He got us through this project scot-free. Dave May – DEW’s 2011 Safety Employee of the Year
Carpenter Dave May is this year’s DEW 2011 Safety Employee of the Year. Dave has been with DEW since September 2007 and a year later joined the SHARP Team. This man has been so generous in his life. Dave is always helping others and it is great that he is now on the receiving end and the recipient of this award. Dave received nominations from Rick Davis and John Krezinsky. “I have worked with Dave for a few years and he is very proactive and very sharp in maintaining safety throughout every job.” – Rick “He has consistently worked to be the ‘go to guy’ on his job site and to be the primary resource for his supervisors, subs and co-workers in regards to all things safety. Whether doing an audit or correcting job site deficiencies, his attitude towards safety is second to none and always in the best interest of DEW and our subs. “- John And has anyone ever seen Dave without a smile and a positive attitude? His demeanor is always upbeat; he acts with quiet authority and is indeed a very kind and wonderful man. Dave has received a commemorative DEW jacket, $100 cash, an extra day of vacation and his name has been added to our Safety Employee of the Year plaque. Dave lives in Cambridge with his wife Sally and sons Jordan and Miles.
