Burlington, VT – Champlain College celebrated it’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building, Wednesday, October 21 at Aiken Hall at Champlain College. This is the College’s and DEW’s first Gold Rating for new construction. Aiken Hall is the 5th Project in Vermont to achieve a LEED Gold rating. A few features that contributed to Aiken’s LEED certification include: Energy Efficient lighting, heating and elevator installation, Improved building envelope through insulation upgrades, Salvaged hard-wood floors and re-use of many original building materials, Slat roof shingles and the selection of other regional building materials, Construction waste diverted from landfill and often donated to Re-Cycle North, Access to alternative transportation options such as CCTA buses and CareShare Vermont. DEW’s 2nd “certified” project, Aiken, was built in 1885 and 100 percent renovated in 2008 to serve as the home of Champlain College’s CORE education department, with faculty offices, meeting rooms and special event facilities. Designed in the Queen-Anne Style, the three-story wood framed and masonry building was originally a residence, and converted to a dormitory in the 1980s. Aiken Hall is a historic building, listed on the Vermont Historic Sites Register and is a significant symbol of the historic “Hill Section” neighborhood developed from the 1870’s to the early 1900’s in Burlington. DEW currently has 9 LEED registered projects pending certification.
DEW Breaks Ground on Jay Peak Ice Arena
Jay, Vermont – Officials from DEW Construction Corp. and Jay Peak Resort held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 for the new 28,000 square foot NHL regulation Ice Arena. The new facility will have seating for 750, a snack bar, a skate rental and sharpening shop and four locker rooms. Guests of Honor included Governor Jim Douglas, State Representatives and officials from both Jay Peak Resort and DEW Construction Corp. The project is slated to be complete in mid April 2010. Greg Leech is the DEW Project Manager and Larry Bertrand is the Superintendent. The architect is Black River Design.
DEW receives Governor’s Award
Montpelier, VT – DEW Construction was honored with an award for its Resource Protection Program at the State House on April 20, 2009. DEW, along with several other Vermont companies, was recognized by the Governor for their environmental leadership. “Today’s recipients represent a cross-section of Vermont’s commitment to responsible stewardship of our natural resources,” said Governor Douglas. “Vermont’s rural economy is dependent on a healthy working landscape. The companies and organizations represented today are leaders in what I call the Vermont Way – where our economic and environmental heritage are inextricably intertwined.” Some of the award winners were making return trips, while others, like DEW, joined the ranks for the first time. “All winners showed the type of initiative and innovation that drives Vermont’s unparalleled reputation as an environmental leader,” the Governor said. DEW received their award for Environmental Excellence in Resource Conservation for their “Resource Protection Program” which incorporates recycling and salvage into its construction operations. Members of DEW’s SHARP Committee (Safety, Health & Resource Protection Committee) along with several other DEW representatives were present at the ceremony.
DEW Construction Receives SHARP Recognition Award
The Vermont Department of Labor’s Project WorkSAFE Program is pleased to announce that DEW Construction of Williston, Vermont has met and successfully completed the requirements of the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) for the Jay Peak Ski Area Hotel Expansion Project. DEW Construction and Project WorkSAFE, Vermont’s Occupational Safety and Health Consultation Program, began working on the certification process more than four months ago. “We applaud the employees and management of DEW in this accomplishment.” said Scott Meyer, Manager of Project WorkSAFE. “To be conducting this type of work while maintaining a safe workplace speaks very well to the caliber and commitment of staff at DEW and all its sub contractors’ on this site. They have a lot to be proud of and we hope that other Vermont employers will follow in their lead.” Employees of DEW and their sub-contractors on this project were the main focal point of the recognition which was attended by Governor James Douglas, Director of Workers Compensation & Safety Division J. Stephen Monahan, Manager of Project WorkSafe Scott Meyer, representatives from DEW Construction, the Jay Peak Ski Area, and Parker Riehle President of the Vermont Ski Area Association. David May Selected for DEW 2008 Employee Volunteer of Year Award
Carpenter David May has been selected as DEW’s 2008 Employee Volunteer of the Year. David was selected for his extensive involvement with several community organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Cambridge Cub and Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol and the Smuggler’s Notch Fish & Game Club. David also volunteers for DEW’s SHARP (Safety, Health and Resource Protection) Committee. David puts in over 480 volunteer hours a year! Recently, DEW Construction, in conjunction with David May and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Jeffersonville, spearheaded a returnable bottle and can drive at DEW’s main office and jobsites. The money raised is being put towards the Matthew Mazzola Spinal Injury fund. The fund was created with hopes of purchasing a special wheelchair that costs about $40,000 for Matthew Mazzola (quadriplegic), a young man who was injured in a swimming accident. The new wheel chair will greatly improve his ability to move around. DEW started the Volunteer of Year award in order to recognize employees who give back to their communities. The winner has their name etched onto a plaque that is prominently displayed in DEW’s main office and receives a check for $250.
