It appears most of DEW’s current projects fared well during Irene. Other than some rain damage at our Bennington State Office Building project, it looks like all the other projects had little to no damage.
Unfortunately, some of the projects DEW recently completed did not fair as well. Castleton State College’s new Spartan Athletic Complex was damaged badly by water. DEW has already jumped on board to help out the college with damaged areas.
Waterbury Fire Station also suffered some damage. Luckily, built on a flood plain, the project was built with flood vents that allowed water to equalize. The water peaked only about 1 inch about the concrete flood barrier.
Most importantly, thoughts go out to Superintendent Tony Papa’s (Rochester, VT) and Willis Whitaker (Stockbridge, VT) who have been stranded. The communities of Rochester & Stockbridge were devastated by Irene and have been cut off since Sunday without power, food, gas, etc. Looks like help is finally on its way.
